Black History Month

Black History month is a time set aside for all Americans to recognize the achievements of African Americans and reflect on the fundamental role African Americans have played in building our Nation from its earliest days.

The origins of Black History Month date back to 1925 when historian Carter G. Woodson campaigned educators to set aside a week in February, that included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, to recognize and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the United States of America.

Today, Black History Month remains relevant as an educational opportunity for all Americans to remark on the splendid cultural and ethnic diversity of our nation
